Coral trout on the falling tide

Eight anglers, one sheltered reef and a run of coral trout once the tide turned at 7:40.

Sunrise over the reef with a fishing boat on calm water

We left Berth 4 at 6:30 with a full Reef Runner and a forecast of light westerlies. The first two drops over the Pinnacles were quiet, so Captain Tomas moved us inside the second wreck where the current was just starting to slacken.

Once the tide turned at 7:40 it was on. Coral trout up to 6 kg, a couple of solid red emperor, and enough sweetlip to keep the deck busy for an hour straight. Little Ava, aged eight, landed the fish of the day and refused help with the net.

What worked

  • Fresh squid strips on paternoster rigs
  • 4/0 circle hooks, 50 lb leader
  • Fishing the last hour of the run-out and the first of the slack

The bite switched on the minute the water stopped moving. It happens on that wreck nearly every time.

Captain Tomas Okafor

Everyone went home with cleaned, bagged fillets. Next week the moon is heading toward full, so the evening tides should line up even better.
