A mahi run on the shelf edge

A floating weed line 22 miles out held a school of mahi-mahi that would not stop biting.

Blue Water Chase days start with a long run, and this one paid off. Twenty-two miles out we found a weed line with birds working over it and the water temperature jumped two degrees in a few hundred meters.

First pass down the edge we had three rods go at once. The group landed eleven mahi-mahi before lunch, the biggest about 14 kg, plus a wahoo that cut through the leader just as it reached the boat.

Notes for next time

  • Skirted lures in pink and blue out-fished everything else
  • Keep one fish hooked in the water and the school stays with the boat
  • Pack an extra layer. It was cooler offshore than at the wharf

If you want a shot at the shelf this month, book a private charter early. Calm offshore days go fast in October.
